Manchester United vs. West Bromwich Albion Preview

Saturday’s game at Old Trafford sees table toppers Manchester United host West Bromwich Albion.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have opened up a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League after Javier Hernandez’s late winner clinched all three points in Boxing Day’s seven goal thriller against Newcastle United.

The Red Devils could welcome back Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and Phil Jones whilst Shinji Kagawa may be amongst the substitutes after missing the last two months. Wayne Rooney is expected to miss at least two weeks with a knee injury.

Top scorer Robin Van Persie got his sixteenth goal of the season last time out, and is 3.75 (11/4) with Bet Victor to open the scoring on Saturday, whilst Hernandez, who could make a rare start in Rooney’s absence is available at a best price of 5.0 (4/1).

1.33 (1/3) is the best price on offer for the home win, with West Brom 11.0 (10/1) outsiders with most bookmakers. The draw is widely available at 5.5 (9/2).

After previously going four games without a win, West Brom secured back to back victories against Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers to go within level on points with fourth place Tottenham Hotspur.

They will be without defenders Jonas Olsson and Goran Popov and midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu, whilst George Thorne has been recalled from a loan spell at Peterborough United.

Strikers Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku are both available at 13.0 (12/1) in the first Goalscorer markets, with Peter Odemwingie a 15.0 shot (14/1).

WELBECK WILL GET CHANCE

The Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the striker Danny Welbeck will be getting opportunities to play this season after the striker has found himself increasingly on the bench since the arrival of Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman was signed from Arsenal for £ 24 million on a huge contract, which means that Sir Alex Ferguson has often resorted to using the new striker in favour of Danny Welbeck. The England international came through the ranks at Manchester United and was one of the revelations for the club last season. Even though United failed to win any trophy, it was a successful season for Welbeck on a personal level.

Ferguson has confirmed that he is likely to rest a number of first-team players for the match against Galatasaray in the Champions League. Manchester United are currently in the first place in the group, with their progression to the last 16 stage already confirmed. This means that Danny Welbeck is likely to get a rare first-team outing. Since Roy Hodgson was appointed as the England manager, Danny Welbeck has been one of the regulars for England having scored five goals in just 10 matches. Yet, he has found first-team opportunities limited at United.

“It is difficult for me. I don’t know how I can answer it other than to say, with Van Persie coming in and Wayne Rooney, you tend to rely on the experience of these players. But what we have to try and do is alternate selections so Danny feels he is making a contribution. The important thing is that they feel as though they are making a contribution over the course of the season. That is what the four of them did in 1999,” said Ferguson ahead of the Champions League match with Galatasaray.

WELBECK GETTING EXCITED

The Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has said that he is extremely excited about the number of attacking options within the current Manchester United first-team. The England international is one among the numerous strikers the manager Sir Alex Ferguson has at its disposal.

The arrival of Robin van Persie for around £ 24 million has strengthened Manchester United attack significantly according to Danny Welbeck. The Manchester United youth product was one of the surprising players last season after he managed to keep out both Dimitar Berbatov and Hernandez out of the first team. However, he is facing a tough competition ahead of him to play regularly this season.

Contrary to be unhappy, the 23-year-old striker has said that he is extremely happy that the club has a lot of options when it comes to the attacking front. Manchester United have made a good start to the season following the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton on the opening day. Since then, they have managed to win all the matches up until now including the 2-1 win over Liverpool last weekend. Manchester United will be coming up against Tottenham this weekend. It is a feature they have remain undefeated for the last 23 years.

“It is a really healthy competition. We have a wide variety of strikers to choose from and that creates a good selection problem for the manager. It will have a good effect on the team. I have had a couple of games. I am looking forward to pushing on now and getting 90 minutes under my belt. It takes a while to get your fitness up,” said the striker. Danny Welbeck has not been part of the starting line-up since the opening day 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton, in which he did not complete the full 90 minutes.

COLE KEEN ON WELBECK

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has said that he expects striker Danny Welbeck to be a major success for Manchester United this season. The 21-year-old star has become a real striker for Manchester United ever since the one season loan deal with Sunderland under manager Steve Bruce.

Since then, he has been able to keep out the likes of Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov out of the first team action. Even though it remains to be seen if he considers his future at Manchester United for the foreseeable future, Andy Cole reckons that he can be a great player in the future.

The former Manchester United striker is the last one of the most successful with the Red Devils over the last two decades after having lifted numerous titles, while also forming a deadly partnership with Dwight Yorke. Many have seen the similarities of the partnership between Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole in the partnership between Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. They both combined to great effect in the second half of last campaign and Ferguson will be hoping for the same. Danny Welbeck’s contract, though, has been the cause of headaches for Sir Alex Ferguson because his deal comes to an end in two seasons.

“I love watching Danny play and people ask me a lot about him. Chicharito’s injury last season gave Danny the chance to shine and he took that opportunity. He’s done very well for himself. He got himself into the England squad and, again, he made the most of that chance. First and foremost, he’s not let himself down at any stage. So this is going to be a big season for him. All I can say is that Danny has the attributes required to score plenty of goals,” said Andy Cole in a recent interview.

WELBECK OWES ROONEY

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has said that he owes a lot to Wayne Rooney for performing so well in all competitions this season. Danny Welbeck was returning to Manchester United after a loan spell with Sunderland, which was extremely successful.

However, he still says that he was in limbo over his Manchester United career due to the presence of players like Dimitar Berbatov and Hernandez. The Mexican was coming into the season after having scored more than 20 goals last season, while Dimitar Berbatov was the top scorer for United. However, Welbeck has struck an impressive partnership with Wayne Rooney, which has resulted in a number of goals for Manchester United.

The youth team product has now been named in the Euro 2012 squad by England manager Roy Hodgson. He says that a lot of the success this season is due to the mentoring by Wayne Rooney. The 26-year-old striker is regarded as one of the best in the business, but Welbeck says that he has never had the huge egos and has always provided him with a helping hand when he needed the most. Danny Welbeck has also said that Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand congratulate him for making it into the Euro 2012, despite his omission from the squad.

“I owe Wayne a lot. He has been a terrific friend and a brilliant help to me. We have really forged a great partnership. And he is amazing during a game. He never stops yapping in my ear, telling me, ‘Daniel this’ and ‘Daniel that’. Wayne’s funny like that, he calls me Daniel on the pitch, even though most people call me Danny. Yet off the pitch it’s Danny or Welbz. Don’t ask me why,” said Danny Welbeck at the joy of making it as a Manchester United first-team player.

ROONEY HAILS WELBECK

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said that Danny Welbeck has been the best player for the club this season.

Danny Welbeck returned from a loan spell at Sunderland with his future unsure at one of the best clubs in England.

However, he has been able to use his exceptional pace to great effect, as he has been able to keep players like Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov out of the team. United are looking on course to lift their record 20th Premier league title. Regardless of whether they lift the Premier league title or not, Wayne Rooney has said that Danny Welbeck receives his vote as the Player of the Season.

Danny Welbeck was highly rated within Manchester United, but was unable to get first team opportunities last season. Hence, he went to Sunderland where he performed brilliantly under Steve Bruce. His impact at Sunderland has been so brilliant that Steve Bruce struggled to replicate the same success from last season, which ultimately led to his sacking.

Since his return to Manchester United, Danny Welbeck has formed a quite impressive partnership with England striker Wayne Rooney. It is some praise to receive from Wayne Rooney, who is one of the best players in the world and who has scored 28 goals for United this season.

“There are a few candidates for Player of the Season, but I’d have to say Welbeck. Danny’s been brilliant and has spent a lot of time working on his finishing which has paid off. I think he’ll become a great player, not just for United but for England as well. He brings a lot of energy to the team. He works very hard and always has defenders on the back foot, which is great for me as it gives me space to get on the ball,” Rooney told The Mirror.

WELBECK WANTS TITLE

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck is looking forward to winning his first English Premier League medal with The Red Devils and believes that nothing will be able to stop them from claiming an unprecedented 20th English top flight title.

The 21 year old has been sparkling form for United this season after he returned from his loan spell at Sunderland last season and his efforts in front of goal and his partnership with England international striker Wayne Rooney has benched last season’s sensation Javier Hernandez as well.

Welbeck, who was recently included in interim England manager Stuart Pearce’s side to take on Holland insists that Ferguson and the players’ hunger to win the title gives them the edge in the title race ahead of city neighbors Manchester City and he also believes that having been in this situation many times over the last two decades, The Red Devils certainly are in pole position to claim their crown.

Danny Welbeck is also looking forward to contributing as many goals as he can to the side’s title winning cause and according to him, the match with Tottenham Hotspur in the weekend is one of those matches that define the character of the title race. Welbeck is also very happy for his team mate Tom Cleverly, who is currently nursing an injury for making a comeback after getting injured just after the start of the season.

With just 12 games remaining till end of the season, United trail City by just two points and with The Citizens still to play most of the big clubs as well as United at the Etihad Stadium, Danny Welbeck believes that Manchester United must win all their games and if that happens, they will easily take home their 13th English Premier League and 20th English top flight title overall.
