Steve Bruce has revealed that is extremely happy with the way the strike partnership between Danny Welbeck and Gyan is working out. The striker returned from a knee injury in the 5-0 drubbing by Manchester City at the weekend - their sixth loss in the last seven league outings.
The Black Cats have not scored since Asamoah Gyan's strike in the 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham on 12th February but Bruce now hopes to rectify this statistic with increased competition in the squad.
As well as Welbeck, Michael Turner also returned against City from his own lengthy absence - again with a knee problem.
The Sunderland boss told the club's official website: "That's the biggest thing I have now, competition. Danny Welbeck is fit, he adds competition to Gyan - that's what a strong, healthy squad is all about.
